In NSW, a person who wants to undertake owner builder work valued at more than $12,000 needs to complete an education course approved by the Director General. This course was developed by Fair Trading and is nationally accredited for 5 years with provision for a mid-term review.
The course in designed to “better prepare those owner builders who are not trade trained, to discharge a range of legal responsibilities, including workplace safety and construction in accordance with approved Council plans. The Course is aimed at improving safety onsite for workers, supporting the certification of construction, equiping owner-builders with useful knowledge and skills and to be more able to avoid contractual disputes.” After completing the Course in Owner-Builder Compliance, all relevant documentation with your permit application should be provided to your nearest Fair Trading Centre. If these meet all the necessary criteria, and the application fee is paid, an owner–builder permit can be issued while you wait.
